Professor Peter Ajibade

Metal complexes as magic bullets against drug resistant diseases and precursors for nanomaterials.

The study of chemistry until the nineteenth century was viewed as a religion derived from alchemical roots that focused on spiritual quest in search of keys to immortality, methods to synthesize gold and magic portions to cure diseases. The central piece of this quest are the metal ions and in recent years, metal complexes are being explore as pharmaceuticals. We have designed metal complexes of antimalarial drugs that are more active than chloroquine against the drug resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum. In search for better alternatives to cis-platin and its derivatives that are non-selective cytotoxic anticancer agents, we have employed computation-docking methods to design anticancer compounds with targets other than DNA and studies show potentials as possible metallodrugs of the future. At present, the use of metal complexes as precursors for nanomaterials with novel properties for anticancer drug delivery and fabrication of next generation solar cells are being explore.
