Albie Sachs to deliver the 13th Victoria and Griffiths Mxenge Memorial Lecture

Is this the country we fought for? Struggle hero Albie Sachs will pose this thought-provoking question at the 13th Victoria and Griffiths Mxenge Memorial Lecture at UKZN on 16 April 2015.  The Lecture is hosted annually by the School of Law to honour the memory of slain attorneys Victoria and Griffiths Mxenge and the important roles they played in the struggle to liberate South Africans from the shackles of apartheid.

This is an important Lecture on the School’s calendar and over the years it has been delivered by prominent legal luminaries from South Africa including the late former president Mr Nelson Mandela, the late Chief Justice Pius Langa and former Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Zakeria (Zac) Yacoob.

The Lecture precedes the School of Law Graduation ceremony on April 17 where Sachs will deliver the keynote address to inspire the next generation of legal minds.

Sachs’ dedication to the struggle against apartheid through his work as a Lawyer and activist led to him being imprisoned, tortured and exiled in the pursuit for a free South Africa. 

Sachs visited the School of Law in February for the screening of his documentary: Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa, produced by Abby Ginzberg which explores the value of human dignity, equality, freedom and the critical role he played as an architect of South Africa’s first democratic constitution. His ideals resonate with those the Mxenges sacrificed their lives for.  

The aim of his Lecture is to give South Africans an introspective view of the sacrifices made which ensured the rights and freedom enjoyed today.

The Lecture will be followed by an awards ceremony in which Law students’ achievements will be recognised.
