UKZN SGLD Celebrates Women in Leadership

Among the women invited to speak at the event were UKZN Chief Finance Officer, Mrs Nontuthuko Mbhele; Former SRC President and current Deputy President of UKZN’s Convocation, Ms Bavelile Hlongwa, Professor Managay Reddi, Dean and Head of the School of Law at UKZN; and Dr Roseline Laka-Mathebula, UKZN Executive Director: Student Services.

The seminar started with those gathered remembering and honouring the women who have led with absolute bravery such as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Albertina Sisulu and many others. Mbhele spoke about women being masters of multitasking. ‘Balancing a successful career and family is possible for any woman through prayer and hard work, but mostly prioritisation helps women to become even greater leaders in their respective field,’ said Mbhele.

Hlongwa encouraged women to continuously lead fearlessly and empower themselves by having a thirst for knowledge. ‘As women, it is important for us to read and know more about our history, policies and our constitution. This would enable us to participate in any political dialogue confidently and contribute to the policies that affect our daily lives,’ she said.

By inviting only women speakers, the SGLD wanted to promote womanhood and ensure that women get this opportunity to gather and network amongst themselves; hoping they will all draw strength to lead from each other and discuss burning social issues.
