UKZN’s team in the 2012 SASOL Baja SAE Competition (consisting of Hein Etzel, Kyle Pullinger, Aneel Kallan and Prashvik Premlal), did the University proud this weekend. The Mechanical Engineering students won the endurance race and achieved second place overall in the competition.

The event was held at the Gerotek Test Facilities in Pretoria, and drew significant interest from universities around the country. In total, 14 Baja SAE cars from 9 universities in South Africa competed in the two day event.

Despite the team experiencing some technical difficulties, that saw them start the endurance race three laps behind the rest of the field, the UKZN team persevered to finish the endurance race in first place. Hein Etzel, a member of the team, said that the team worked well together and made strategic decisions that had positive outcomes for their placement in the competition.

Professor Glen Bright and Dr Freddie Inambao was proud of his students, saying that their hard work had paid off and was rewarded with the well-deserved trophies.
